A Royal Connection | Dolls With Provenance
13/05/2026 | Rebecca Hallett , Leigh Gotch
As another auction day speeds ever closer, our Fine Dolls department are here offering a set of dolls, with provenance relating to Queen Victoria! Keep reading to uncover the royal story behind these all original, bisque fashion dolls.
Where did the story begin?
The story of these dolls begins in the 1870s, where a DR M.C.Taylor, who served as Chaplain to Queen Victoria at Balmoral, is working his final days with her majesty before retirement.

How did the family acquire such dolls?
These dolls have been handed down through the vendor's family, and based on research conducted by the family via the Windsor Archives (photocopy provided), it is believed that these dolls were given to Dr. Taylor’s children by Queen Victoria.
The archives show how the queen recorded in her journal on 23rd November 1873 ‘went to Kirk were Dr Taylor performed the service and preached, taking leave of his parishioners in a few touching words, at the conclusion of his sermon. Drove in the afternoon with Beatrice to the Manse to wish Mrs Taylor good bye and to give him a silver inkstand and toys and books for the children. Dr Taylor was most grateful’.
