'One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them'  - J.R.R. Tolkien.

One of the more unexpected lots to be found in our Coins & Banknotes timed auction is a 3 volume set of first edition 'The Lord of the Rings' books, from 1954-1955!

The set comprises of 'The Fellowship of the Ring', First Edition Second Impression Dec 1954, 'The Two Towers', First Edition 1955, and 'The Return of the King', First Edition 1954, all in original red cloth but lacking their dust jackets. A wonderful collectible set, especially for fans of Tolkien's work! 

First intended to be a children's tale in the style of Tolkien's earlier work, 'The Hobbit', his writing of the Lord of the Rings trilogy quickly became more serious in writing, addressing an older audience. The Lord of the Rings trilogy remains one of the most popular works of fiction of the 20th century, and Tolkien's work strongly influenced the development of the fantasy genre that seemingly flourished following the publication of his books.
