Scarce Vintage Star Wars AFA 90 Grade Carded Boba Fett Figure | Auction Preview

I'm Rob, C&T's Retro Toy specialist, and I'm here to tell you a little bit about the highly desireable AFA 90 Grade, Scarce Star Wars Boba Fett Figure, that we have consigned, due to go under the hammer at auction on February 1st.
To view this Q&A on YouTube follow this link.

Q. What makes Boba Fett such a desirable and collectable figure?

For me, as a Boba Fett collector, it has to be the armour. It’s the first time in the Star Wars Universe that we see this mysterious character, a bounty hunter, come in with such a bright armour, looking for Han Solo. He doesn’t say a lot in the films, but when he does, you’re sure to listen, purely because it’s Boba Fett. He’s one of the most famous characters you recognise instantly from Star Wars.

Q. What can you tell us about the grading of this figure?

This is graded AFA 90, near mint. That’s one of the highest grades you can get on a carded Star Wars figure. It’s unusual to find one in this condition, there probably aren’t many that have survived, and definitely not that many graded 90. This is a light blue version, with the unpainted knee. Even not graded 90, this figure is still incredibly hard to get. If you’re a collector, this is a variant figure that would have been on your list at one time of another.

Q. Have you come across a Boba Fett figure in this condition before?

I haven’t come across this figure in this condition before no. Loose, I’ve found the figure in conditions similar, so probably an 85 grading, but carded I don’t think many people have ever seen a carded Boba Fett, graded 90.

Q. What is the history of Kenner & Palitoy? How did this affect a figures popularity?

Kenner was the original Star Wars manufacturer. Palitoy is who distributed them in the UK for Kenner. The Palitoy logo, carded figures have become very very popular with collectors. This one is a Palitoy 45 back, and it’s got the ‘SPECIAL OFFER!’ on the back. Palitoy, with collectors has become far more valuable with certain figures. For example, the Vinyl Cape Jawa on a Palitoy card, is worth almost double what a Kenner figure would be. As a result, it’s become harder to get figures in this condition.

Q. What do you expect this figure to make at auction?

It’s hard to value a figure in such good condition, it is graded 90 and there possibly isn’t going to be another one in circulation, for sale. We’ve put this in at £2,500-3,000, although I can see this going for far more than that. As I’ve said, it is an incredibly hard figure to get. In this condition, I cannot stress enough, there probably aren’t many in the world that are going to be graded AFA 90, and for such a synonymous character like Boba Fett.

Q. What can you tell us about the card itself?

The card back itself, it’s quite a nice one. To have Boba Fett firing his fire out of his blaster, it’s an iconic image, synonymous with Star Wars action figures. In my opinion, this is one of the nicer card backs for Boba Fett.
