Glen Chapman Specialist in Vintage Toys & Police Memorabilia
Glen has over 30 years experience in dealing with Vintage Toys. In 1987 he opened a specialist shop in Greenwich, South East London, Unique Collections. For many years he ran a mail order business out of his shop, producing a catalogue for vintage toys and Police memorabilia with the help of his father. With the invention of the internet, Glen took the bull by the horns and was one of the first full time dealers to launch his own specialist website www.uniquecollections.co.uk In 2013 he decided to launch a new business selling Vintage Toys for clients at auction and formed C&T Auctioneers and Valuers. Matthew Tredwen – Specialist in Militaria / Orders / Decorations and Medals
Matthew was brought up in the world of Militaria collecting, with his father being one of the UK’s longest established specialist Militaria dealers. He learnt the trade from a young age, at 14 he had a Militaria stall at the London Military Market in Camden Passage, Islington, North London. When he left School at 16, he started his own Militaria Business, originally dedicated to Orders / Decorations and Medals of all combat nations but soon spread to cover all items of Military collectables. He started his own website www.falleneagle.com in 1999, which soon became one of the leading Militaria collecting websites in the UK. In 2013, he was looking for a change of direction, and when approached by Glen Chapman to run a Militaria department of an auction house, he jumped at the chance. Leigh Gotch Specialist in Antique Dolls, Teddy Bears and Fine Toys
Leigh joined International Auctioneers Bonhams as the Toy and Doll specialist in 1994 after 5 years of running a successful Antique Doll and Toy business with his wife Rachel at their shop in the famous Portobello Road and exhibiting at fairs both in Europe and America. Over the following 21 years at Bonhams Leigh has offered for sale an all-encompassing range of fine antique Toys, Trains, Dolls, Dolls Houses and Teddy Bears with many highlights including selling the world famous Vivien Greene Dolls House collection in 1998/99 over two sales achieving total sales of over £500,000. Toy highlights over the years included many four and five figure sales for Fine German Toys and Trains by such makes as Marklin, Bing, Carette and Gunthermann, English toys have always featured strongly in Leigh’s sales which always offered a range of toys from the likes of Dinky, Meccano and Hornby together with Corgi and Matchbox. Dolls have played a strong role in Leigh’s auctions, constantly achieving outstanding prices including selling Marianna an important George II English wooden doll in original court mantua dress (circa 1747) for £58,000, French doll have always featured prominently and are as popular today with collectors as always. The highlight of Leigh’s career however was to offer for sale a single owner collection of German character dolls in 2014, the 92 lot auction achieving an outstanding £930,400 and culminating in achieving a new World Record price for a doll at auction selling the only known example of mould No.108 by Kámmer and Reinhardt for £242,500. James Opie – Toy Soldiers and Figures
James Opie has been valuing and cataloguing toy soldiers and figures for well over thirty years, working for Phillips, Christies and then Bonhams. Now his unique series of toy soldier auctions, comprising in all over three million figures sold, takes place at C & T Auctioneers three times a year. He is one of the world’s pre-eminent toy soldier experts, with nine books on the subject in publication. He was trained as a military historian, and for many years was known to the 40,000 members of the Military and Aviation Book Society as their Editor. Types of figures included in the sales come from all over the world, manufactured over the last two hundred years until the present day in tin, lead, composition, mazac, pewter or plastic among other materials: Britains, Heyde, Timpo, CBG Mignot, King and Country, Tradition, Lucotte and Elastolin are just a few of the famous makers on offer, as well as the breathtaking models of the master military modelers such as Stadden, Berdou and Metayer. Tim Harper has been a well respected collector and later dealer in printed paper, photographs and ephemera for over 30 years. He has catalogued and helped create some large private collections in this field. His company World War Books is one of the leading specialist book dealerships within the UK. Tim has always had a passion for early photograph albums and ephemera. Laurence Fisher – Specialist in Mechanical Music, Technical and Scientific Instruments
Laurence Fisher is one of very few specialists whose sole expertise covers the field of Mechanical Music, Technical Apparatus and Scientific Instruments. In 1996 Laurence joined Phillips in London as saleroom porter and working his way up to become the youngest International Head of Department of Mechanical Music at Christies, South Kensington at the age of 25 in 2004. It was the same role he was appointed with when approached by Bonhams in Knightsbridge in 2007. Highlights include several 3 and 4 rotor Enigma machines which all made over £25,000 each, the sale of Important Mechanical Musical Instruments in New York which included a Hupfeld Violinst Orchestrion which sold for £550,000 and a Marconiphone 702 – the world’s oldest working electronic television from 1936 – which touched £12,000. Now in 2016, Laurence is hungry to return to the directing of regular Mechanical Music and Scientific auctions for all. From gramophones, singing birds and musical boxes, through to globes, microscopes, automata and wireless. Celia Mayne – Auction House Administrator & Office Manager
Celia has joined C&T Auctioneers since we have moved to Kenardington in 2015. Celia is responsible for the smooth running of the day to day office duties. Celia deals with all invoice enquiries for customers and processes payments. She is in charge of all postal relating enquiries for our clients and helps with the smooth running of any auction that involves the use of Mailboxes.
Hannah Vigors – Photography
Hannah joined the team at C&T Auctioneers in 2014 to help with the ever growing demand for high quality photography. She is responsible for all images of Lots offered in auction and the production of the high quality images shown in our printed catalogues. Hannah studied photography at the University of Creative Arts (UCA) in Kent and graduated in 2016.
Zoe Childs – Auction House Assistant
Zoe joined C&T Auctioneers in September 2016 as a part time auction house assistant as well as attending auction days. Zoe is a talented designer and aspiring ambassador for brand UK, demonstrated in 2015/2016 by a print collaboration with wool manufacturers A.W Hainsworth, established in 1783. Zoe’s creative background has been very useful in aiding the design of adverts and cataloging. She is now following her dream to run her own soft furnishing based business.
Harley Chapman – Creative Design and Catalogue Production
Harley studied Fashion Communication and Promotion at Nottingham Trent University, and graduated in 2013. Her expertise have been vital to the quick growth of C&T Auctioneers and Valuers, she is responsible for the design of our Auction Catalogues and Advertising campaigns both in print and social media. An aspiring actress who has been involved in UK produced independent films and TV dramas.
Edward Mayne – Auction Day Executive
Eddy has been a vital part of the C&T Auctioneers and Valuers team since our first live room auction. He is responsible for the setting up and smooth running of the auction room on sale day. Much of the success of the sale day is down to his hard work. Eddy runs his own Militaria business in the Kent town of Hythe. He also is a keen collector of vintage clocks and wristwatches.
